From Cowford to Greater Jacksonville

Jacksonville started as a small river crossing called Cowford, named for the spot where cattle were driven across the St. Johns River. The settlement was renamed in 1822 in honor of Andrew Jackson, Florida’s first territorial governor, who, as it happens, never actually visited the town that carries his name. The Great Fire of 1901 leveled much of downtown and reshaped the city that grew back from it, and Jacksonville has kept expanding ever since, today spanning the wide mix of coastal, riverside, and inland communities we serve across Duval, St. Johns, and Clay counties.
