Green Cove Springs grew up around its natural mineral spring. The first settlement, called White Sulfur Springs, was laid out in 1854, renamed Green Cove Springs in 1866, and made the Clay County seat in 1871. In the late 1800s, river steamers brought northern visitors here for the spring, and the town was promoted as the Saratoga of the South. The great freeze of 1895 and the railroads carrying tourists farther south ended that boom. The town found new life when the Navy opened Lee Field as World War II approached. After the war, the river beside it held a fleet of mothballed Navy ships, and the old base is now the Clay County Port and Reynolds Industrial Park.
