The Ferry Crossing That Became Clay County’s First Town

Middleburg is one of the oldest settlements in Northeast Florida. In the 1820s it was a ferry crossing on Black Creek called Clark’s Ferry, and later Garey’s Ferry. In 1836, during the Second Seminole War, the Army built Fort Heileman where the north and south forks of Black Creek meet, and it became a major supply depot. The Black Creek Methodist Church was founded here in 1828, and the town took the name Middleburg by the 1850s. When Clay County was created in 1858, Middleburg served as its first, temporary county seat.
