Named for a Naturalist

Bartram Park takes its name from William Bartram, the Philadelphia naturalist who traveled along the St. Johns River in the 1760s and 1770s. He even tried his hand at running a plantation on the river in 1766, then gave it up within a year and went back to studying the plants and wildlife of Florida. His book about those travels, published in 1791, became a classic. More than two centuries later, the land along I-95 at the southern tip of Duval County became Bartram Park, a planned mix of homes, apartments, offices and shopping. The Shoppes at Bartram Park opened in 2004, and Bartram Springs, its largest single family neighborhood, was built out by 2009.
